Does UV Light Can Fight Against the Viruses?

Ultraviolet (UV) light is the type of Electromagnetic radiation. It consists of more energy than the visible light or the radio waves but it is less energy than the gamma rays or X-rays. It can be exposed to UV light through natural sunlight or human-made sources like tanning beds. UV light has been used to kill the germs like viruses and bacteria. Especially, in this time getting attention during and after the pandemic of coronavirus.

It has several types of UV light. They are classified according to how the energy of they have.

Types of UV light:

UVA Light:

UVA light has the lowest number and amount of energy. It is mainly exposed to the UVA light and when you are come out in the sun. Exposure to UVA light has been linked to skin damage and skin aging.

UVB Light:

UVB light will sit in the middle of the UV light spectrum. It is a small portion of the sunlight which contains the UVB light. It is one of the types which contributes to sunburns and it causes most skin cancers.

UVC Light:

UVC light has more and the most energy. UVC light is from the sun which is mostly absorbed in their earth’s ozone, generally, it will not make expose it on the daily basis. However, it has a different human-made source of UVC light.

UVC light is a type of UV light it is most effective at killing germs, bacterias and versus. It can be used to disinfect the air, water and surfaces. UVC which is also known as germicidal UVC includes wavelengths from 200 to 280 nm, the peak value of 253.7nm is the effective wavelength to kill germs, bacterias and versus.

Over the decades, scientists have board-spectrum of UVC light, the wavelength is between 254 nanometers (nm) that is highly effective to kill the viruses and bacteria which are destroying the molecular bonds that hold the DNA together. It is a narrow spectrum of ultraviolet light that is called the far-UVC it kills the microbes without damaging any of the healthy tissues.
